Copa America Mains. USA Vs Argentina two different ways to barbecuing
June 21, 2016
After left behind their opponents during the quarter-final of the Centenario tournament, Jürgen Klinsmann and Gerardo Martino will show two different approaches to the game, both trying to see the meat falling off the bone.
Former Germany player and head coach, Klinsmann irrupted into the coaching role without any previous experience and nothing else than his status as one of this game stars. His World Cup experience as a player includes been the Germans' attacker in three tournaments including 1990 when they won the competition in Italy. Because of this, he should provide more answers to a Q&A session but on, this time, his last motivational speech should focus on how hard he worked to became World Champion and how hard his squad must work to catch Argentina, a team full of stars.
Klinsmann has already said his team "will not be overawed by the occasion in the aftermath of their 2-1 win against Ecuador" but this time, he is going to miss three of USA most effective players as Alejandro Bedoya, Jermaine Jones and Bobby Wood are out contention, all suspended.
Famous for his controversial way to selecting his starting XI, the 51-year-old face another challenge on their chance to reach the Copa America final for the first time where the main head-breaker is how and who is going to try to stop Lionel Messi. Prompted with the answer was Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler saying "I don't know if you can stop Messi, obviously there is gonna be a lot of attention around him, there always is." And again, this is the key strategy to stop the Albicelestes attacks.
On the other hand, having reached the semi-final apparently hasn't changed the hosts skipper Michael Bradley coolness. During his recent press conference ahead of the game, he was emphatic saying that "It's a semifinal. A chance to get ourselves into a final of a big tournament in our home country," before adding that "whether it was Venezuela or Argentina, it wasn't going to change anything on our side. The longer you play in your career, the more you understand these opportunities don't come around all the time" he also pointed.
Some people thinks that Klinsmann and the US team don't have so many options to confront their today's rivals but if it is something that can help them is his coach personality. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Klinsmann said that football is “player-driven game” so success depends on the individual determination. He looked as he really is, a motivator not just a strategist that will draw a plan on a white board.
Tata Martino is the other face of the coin. As a footballer, he wasn't as successful as his counterpart but what he really has is more experience as a coach. Although he was selected in a fan's poll the best Newell's Old Boys player in history, he is more recognisable as a manager. After learning from Marcelo Bielsa and before taking over the Argentinian squad in 2014, Martino coached Paraguay's National Team, his former Rosario club Newell's and also FC Barcelona replacing Tito Vilanova.
The 53-years-old predilects a style making pressure while the team is attacking. His midfield has to be very creative and able to quick passing.
Argentina is playing Copa America as FIFA's top-ranked nation. They have scored 15 goals in winning all four matches but Martino has warned them over the United States threat saying that "any team that gets to this stage in a tournament, like the U.S., they get there because of their own merit. They had a very difficult group, and they even lost the first game, but they recovered."
The psychological factors involved in the game are other issues that Martino didn't forget due the defeat that Argentina suffered in the last two years.
"If we beat the U.S. we will deal with what this means for the players and the coaches and the potential worry that something like what happened in the World Cup could happen again, but right now we have to take one game at a time," he said.
Another factor is how to protect Lionel Messi from the hard defence he will have during the game for sure. In that case, Martino is thinking that the Barça striker could play again on the wings.
As you can see, the United States and Argentina have different ways to barbecuing. Meanwhile, the first predilects the rubbing, the other leave enough time to tuck in the meat at the right moment.Tonight we are going to know which one put the flavours and who left a clean bone.
